Keeping Workers Safe in the Heat - Tomorrow is Don't Fry Day!

Writer: Region IIRegion II

Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable, every year thousands of workers become sick from occupational heat exposure and some cases are fatal. Most outdoor fatalities occur in the first few days of working in warm or hot environments because the body needs to build a tolerance to the heat gradually over time. Lack of acclimatization represents a major risk factor for fatal outcomes. OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention Campaign webpage has resources to develop a heat stress program.

To help reduce rising rates of skin cancer from overexposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, the Friday before Memorial Day, is designated as “Don’t Fry Day” to encourage sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin.
